InterRail 2010 – Part 16: Rome

I arrived in Rome from Pisa late one evening, and promptly rented a room for my stay.

I started exploring Rome early the next morning, and left the day after that, so I had a full day of Rome goodness!

One of the first places I visited was the Colosseum.

It is much more central than most pictures would have you belive (much like Stonehenge), and it is constantly under refurbishment.

But besides that, and the massive line to get in, I’m glad I got to see it.

Since this was in October, I had seen a lot of talk on Facebook about how icy things were getting back in Norway.

And here I was, in Italy, enjoying ice cream in the sun.

One of my favorite parts of Rome was to visit the Castel Sant’Angelo.

It is such a massive cool old structure, constructed in 123–139 AD, and the insides now serve as a museum.

It is also one of the highest buildings in Rome, so you get a wonderful vista when you reach the top.

I also visited Vatican City, and stood in a giant line on St. Peter’s Square to get into St. Peter’s Basilica.

It was pretty there, but the line took several hours, circeling the square many times, making a vortex of people, and a lantern for beggars and scammers alike.

And at the front there were people trying to sneak past the entire hours-long queue, making the problem even worse for the people following the rules.

If you are religious, there are several sites in Rome much more worthy of a visit than this one.

Give the St. Peter’s Square a look, but don’t bother with the line.

I walked all over Rome that day, finding all sorts of beautiful architecture along the way.

I got back to my room at a very late hour, and spent one more night there.

Then the next day, I headed to Venice!
