John Barry Ballaran is a 2D digital artist based in the Philippines, specializing in drawing and painting character art.
He has worked as an in-house artist for several studios in the past, with jobs ranging from creating background art for games; animating sprites; designing logos; arranging wedding album layouts; drawing traditional portraiture, creating print ads and storyboards for advertisements – basically any job that comes up to help pay the bills.
I edited together two pieces of John Barry Ballaran’s work-in-progress artwork for Anubis: Dog of Death, just on a lark to be honest.
Anubis – Dog of Death wishes you a very happy Valentine’s Day <3
I recently started sharing Anubis: Dog of Death on Line Webtoon, an internet comic portal.
We got a lot of praise, but there was one thing they wanted us to change about the comic.
I and Anubis, the dog of death, would like to wish you all a happy new year!
We hope that 2019 will bring you nothing but joy and wonder!
I am happy to announce this spin-off series to Anubis: Dog of Death!
As opposed to the main comic’s detailed and colorful artwork, Anubis Doodles has a simpler black-and-white chibi style, so that we can release these in-between the main comic’s pages, since Doodles are quicker to draw.
Anubis has dressed up as Santa Claus, and is ready to deliver Christmas cheer to all the good little boys and girls out there.
Anubis has dressed up as Rudolph (as he was otherwise engaged) and is getting ready to bring you all your presents this Christmas!
To celebrate December 5th, International Ninja Day, the main character of my comic Anubis: Dog of Death dressed up as Ninja Brian from Ninja Sex Party, one of my favorite comedy bands.
He already had the right eyebrows, so the costume didn’t need much more.
The logo for Anubis: Dog of Death went through a few changes before we finally decided on a version we could be content with.
We always wanted the logo to look like a pyramid, but even a simple idea like that can take many forms.
The first change we decided to make was to enlarge the word “Anubis”, to make it stand out more than in the first concept piece.
John used the ‘Mortuary’ font for “Anubis”, and the ‘Crypt Keep’ font for “Dog of Death”, and also added a few swirls for effect.
We went through a few different options for what colors to use on the logo before we decided on green, gold, purple and black.
We also briefly played with the idea of enlarging the top of the pyramid, which I am very glad we decided against.
We had decided not to put an Egyptian mural of Anubis on top of the pyramid, but that had left the space there rather blank, so we placed an ankh symbol there instead.
For ancient Egyptians, the ankh symbolised both mortal existence and the afterlife.
The final change we made was to remove the bright green outline around the word “Anubis”, as it simply looked better without it.
