I recently started playing Kingdom Hearts 3, the most recent sequel to one of my favorite childhood games.
The Kingdom Hearts series features a cast of characters from popular Disney films.
But it also features characters from the long-running Final Fantasy video game series from Japan.
The main character, Sora, is designed to fit in with the Final Fantasy characters, more so than with the Disney characters.
In the game, Sora travels around in a spaceship with Goofy and Donald Duck.
They travel from world to world, battling the evil forces of The Heartless wherever they find them.
Most of these worlds are game-levels based on different movies owned by The Walt Disney Company.
Kingdom Hearts 3 started off in a world based on the animated Hercules film from 1997. I have since visited worlds based on both Toy Story (1995) and Tangled (2010).
The story in these Disney-movie worlds are often just the plot from the movies.
But since Sora, Goofy and Donald are there, they’ve had to been shoved in to the movie’s plot as well.
This works better for some worlds than others.
When the story touches upon friendship and camaraderie, Sora and the gang fit in quite well.
But when the story focuses on sadness and loss, it is really weird to have Goofy and Donald Duck hanging around in the periphery.
There is something objectively funny about seeing Donald, Goofy, and a spiky-haired anime boy in the background of a sad death scene.
