Video: Sofa Shop – End of an Era

A slow and sombre remix of the 1993 commercial jingle for the Sofa Shop in Adelaide, Australia.

The Sofa Shop is a recurring inside joke on The Unmade Podcast.

The most recent episode of the podcast inspired this video.

In it Tim and Brady discuss the planned closing of the stores, due to the owner retiring.

I’m not quite sure what genre of music this remix belong to, but I think it might be vaporwave.

According to Wikipedia: “[Vaporwave] is defined by its appropriation of 1980s and 1990s mood music styles such as smooth jazz, elevator music, R&B, and lounge music, typically sampling or manipulating tracks via chopped and screwed techniques and other effects.

Its surrounding subculture is sometimes associated with an ambiguous or satirical take on consumer capitalism and pop culture, and tends to be characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist engagement with the popular entertainment, technology and advertising of previous decades.”

I feel like commercial jingles would fit in quite well with lounge and elevator music. And that also sounded a lot like the process I used when making the remix.

Now, I know that this is not a great song or anything, but I’m pretty happy with it for a first attempt.
