Getting Help From My Mom

one year
A picture of my mother, and me at one year old, taken on the ferry between Molde and Vestnes in 1991.

I am currently looking through a bunch of old pictures to see if there are any I can use for posts about my childhood.

My mother is helping me a lot by snapping shots of her photo-albums and texting the pictures to me.

She’s also helping me fill in any gaps in my memory from the times the photos were taken.

And there are many gaps that needs to be filled, seeing how the bulk of what I am looking through at the moment are pictures taken between the first few weeks of my life up until I turned ten.

It may take some time to work all of these details out, but once I’m done it should lead to a lot of good posts about my childhood.

And beyond the blog, I think this may be good for me to do personally.

I have noticed that I remember less from my early childhood than my girlfriend does, probably because she moved less than me as a kid.

I think it will be good for me to refresh my memory about that time, and even just get to know some details from times that I have no chance of remembering.

  1. Good luck with this endeavor Sindre … I inherited all the photo albums by default – no siblings. I am glad my mom sat down with me years ago and filled me in on who was who as to her family (my grandmother was one of 9 siblings). When I traveled, I kept notes of where I visited on each tour and when I put the pics in the photo album, I used labeling tape so I could remember what everything was – otherwise I’d have forgotten for sure.

    1. I should have done that.
For my interrail photos, I’ve had to describe different statues in great detail on Google to figure out the names of places.

      1. I believe it Sindre – if I had not taken notes and labeled them, I would resort to Google (excellent reference) as well. I did not do the labeling for other times I traveled when I was younger, so I will have to Google to remember exactly where I was and a little more difficult as it is so many years later. Remember when I sent you the post I did which showed the Quay in Bergen and you said it had changed since I was there in 1983.

        1. Yeah, I remember 🙂

Google is a good reference, but sometimes you have to hit the nail exactly.
I had a lot of trouble identifying a sculpture of a golden heart on top of several black hearts, located in Nancy, France.
It will be up in a later post, but I have no idea what it is called.

          1. Do you remember the artist – maybe there’s a site with his/her other works? I spent three weeks with family friends in Spain in 1974 and the woman was born there, so there was no language barrier. I took no notes back then but luckily all the old architecture, churches or monasteries mostly, have been around for centuries so that helped. On a tour, we had an itinerary so I knew exactly what was on each day’s agenda.
