Me and my girlfriend’s summer-holiday is coming to a close, so I figured I would share with you how we have been spending our time off.
Hiking
We have climbed one mountain each week, counting an upcoming one this sunday.
The two previous times we combined the hike With some blueberry picking, and on sunday we are eating at a cafe on the top of Fløyen mountain with the friend we visited in Oslo.
Dinner with family
We had dinner at each of our mothers’ individually, and played a lot of gin rummy with each of them.
Improving our apartment
We stopped renting and bought our first apartment at the start of 2017, and there are still many things we have not gotten around to yet, but we have now fixed a bunch of stuff.
We finally found some dining-chairs we were happy with, we bought a bunch of helpful stuff from Ikea, and we unpacked a lot of boxes.
This also led me to finally get the files out of an old broken computer, as I wanted my digital stuff to be as tidy as my physical stuff is getting close to being.
Boat trip
We spent half a day out on a boat, traveling up a fjord to a harbor named Skjerjehamn, and back again.
My girlfriends mother joined us, and we had a really refreshingly windy voyage.
I cut some hair
I usually take care of my own haircut, as it is really simply to just keep my hair short.
But this is the second time I have cut my girlfriend’s long hair, and I think I’m getting good at it.
Relaxing inside
Much of these three weeks were very rainy here in Bergen, so we spent a lot of time on the couch.
We saw 15 movies: Ant-Man and The Wasp, Blades of Glory, Deer Hunter, Get Smart, IT (1990), IT (2017), Jurassic World, King Kong (1933), Kong: Skull Island, Minority Report, Starsky & Hutch, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2007), Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’, ‘Wet Hot American Summer’, and something tomorrow.
We also finished the Netflix Marvel shows Punisher (season 1) and Jessica Jones (season 2), and we nearly finished a show we had been binging for the last few months, ‘How I Met Your Mother’.
Besides that; we read, solved crosswords, played games, and just enjoyed life in general.
Luckily, we only have to wait for a few more months until we have another two weeks off 🙂

I’m envious you get that much time off – sounds like you got a lot of R&R in.
How much less time do you get?
Could be a difference between Norway and the US.

Well right now I am considered part-time, so no vacation – (I work more hours than part-time in reality though). However, typically, in most offices or businesses, you get three weeks’ vacation time after five years of services. Four weeks of vacation time after ten years of service and five weeks’ vacation time after fifteen years of service. I have heard before that the United States has the least amount of vacation time for their workers in the world. We have very few long holidays either … one extra day at Memorial Day, Labor Day and this year 4th of July fell on a Wednesday which is bad as usually you just get that day off. If it falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, you get the day before or after off. That is how it is for most offices – I think that it should be more. Workers will work harder then.

The people in charge gain little by having tired people working a little more.
In Norway 5 weeks is the standard, 6 after you turn 60, before retirement at 67.
That may change by the time I’m that age, due to a growing population.
That is wonderful Sindre! The U.S. could learn a lot by your generous vacation schedules. Employers here are stingy with time off and employees become tired, not to mention resentful. I work from home and so I have a later a.m. schedule which I like as I can walk, but working from home, sometimes you are a little too “handy” on weekends or off hours.
Of the movies you watched, which was your guys’ favorite?
We saw Blade Runner again yesterday, that was pretty fun.
And it was very nice seeing Wallace & Gromit again, we even sat on the floor eating chips for that one.
Deer Hunter was really good, and Starsky & Hutch was great fun.
And as mentioned in my Kong-post, Skull Island is amazing.
I can’t pick one favorite, but we did not regret seeing any of them, even the bad ones like TMNT-2007.

Wife and i tried, but couldnt get passed the 4th episode of punisher… i am a huge fan of the first movie tho,
Never seen the movie.
We did not get hooked on the show for many episodes, only saw one each day until we were maybe seven episodes in.
But it got better as it went along.
But Jessica Jones is by far the best of the Marvel Netflix shows.
We still want to start that, glad to hear its good.
Season 1 is better, but 2 is still better than most shows like that.

Don’t believe anything about Deer Hunter, good actors in a silly movie.
I served in the U S Army there 70-71. Apocalypse Now, in over-the-top gonzo fashion, better captured the zeitgeist.
Yes, we Americans get very little paid time off. This is sure to get worse under the present plutocratic, criminal, traitorous minority president, sexually and financial blackmailed by Putin.
The rich have always ruled the USA and this is unlikely to change. We need some Euro style democratic socialism but our educational system has been so crippled that most Americans are simply unable to reason well. This is no accident.
Fox ‘News’, the official trump propaganda mouthpiece, also ensures the stupid stay stupid. As the traitor would ‘tweet’, “sad”.

I really liked the new Blade Runner, it builds wonderfully on the old one.
I have had a dvd of Apocalypse Now for years now, I should probably see it soon.
Good to have a recommendation from someone with first-hand knowledge.
Our current goverment has started talking about raising daily work-hours, no doubt inspired by American standards.
Some of the parties that lost to them were actually talking about lowering work-hours, or just having a four-day work-week (something which would produce more jobs), but the conservative side won the last election.
Still, they would be considered liberal by American standards.
