Most know that they should check their email spam-folder, but if you run a blog you also need to remember to check the spam-folder for your comments.
I just checked the folder for the first time in a month, and there were six comments from regular commenters, and apart from that there were only three actual spam comments.
I gave this post that title mostly so that I will be reminded to check each time I see it 😉
One of these comments was from the blogger petrel41, who invited me to take part in The Real Neat Blog Award.
Here are the questions, and my answers:
1. Where do most visits to your blog come from?
Reddit, and at the moment, one single post on Reddit, as I have over 6000 views on my Thanos post from there.
Reddit can be a good way to reach a big audience, but they will likely only read whatever is linked to before returning to Reddit. And you may have to withstand some snarky comments there, even when the post is generally upvoted.
Better to reach a returning audience. A few of them may return, so it could be worth it.
2. What is your favourite sport?
3. What has been a special moment for you so far in 2018?
I can’t say yet… :=)
4. What is your favourite quote?
There are so many! Maybe I’ll have to make a list for another time.
But I bet most of them would be attributed to Douglas Adams:
5. What was your favourite class when still at school?
Don’t think I had any. I did not like school.
The ones I am most happy with in retrospect are English and Norwegian (for writing), Religion (all types, inspiration for fiction) and History (inspiration for fiction).
And I’m glad I know basic math, don’t need more than that.
6. Anything you had wished to have learned earlier?
That I should write down the massive amount of ideas I have.
And ‘people skills’, so its good that I learned that first really.
7. What musical instrument have you tried to play?
I’ve probably tried a lot of them.
If I had recorded it all, I could have put them together into an orchestra of horribleness!
.
Now it’s your turn!
I won’t tag anyone, but anyone who reads this can feel free to take part by answering those same questions themself.
I’d love to hear from you if you do 🙂
Thanks! As a shiny new blogger I hadn’t thought of that.
I need to be getting better about this myself, even after many months 😛
Well done 🙂
Thanks 🙂
Great tip, I often forget about checking the spam folder.
So easy to forget it 🙂
I wonder how many opportunities have been lost to the filter over the years..
Indeed, its always a possibility. Most opportunities have come to me via my blog, or through people reading its posts on Twitter and Facebook. Always worth a quick check in the spam folder once in a while just be sure.
Heh, it hadn’t occurred to me to share posts on Reddit. Do you have more success in smaller (tighter knit) subreddits?
Well, the 6000 one was in the rather big marvelstudios sub.
I was lucky to get a lot of upvotes on that, but it is easier to go unnoticed in the bigger subreddits, as there is more competition.
Smaller subreddits are more dependable, but you will not get as many views if your post does get popular.
The best thing is to share your post where you think it will be the most welcome, that is more important than the numbers.
And it is important to keep in mind that moderators view you as a spammer if more than 10% of your posting on Reddit is advertising your own work.
Learned this the ridiculous way a few months back and found a few great comments stuck in there. Definitely a good reminder!
I just hope the system does not purge the really old “spam”.
Maybe there was good stuff from beyond the earliest comment from 14 days ago.
I had the SPAM issue a few weeks ago and thought Akismet had tweaked it because many of my posts seemingly went into cyberspace, but were found in other’s SPAM filters – several of your comments landed in my SPAM filter. A fellow blogger encountered the same phenomenon and passed along Akismet’s solution … hmmm. https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/57285511/posts/1707
Yeah, seems like they must have changed something.
Seems they think everbody is typing at the speed of a bot 😛
An easy fix for them to make would be that if you follow the person who is commenting, then its most likely not spam!
I follow most of the people who ended up in my filter 😛
I contacted them and gave them a list of the bloggers who often end up in my SPAM and I end up in theirs as well, then they sent me another form and wanted to know if I replied the same way/said the same words to all these people and to give examples. I said that everyone was different – no standard answers.
Hopefully they work something out soon.
If this continues to happen to this degree, maybe I’ll contact them aswell.
I’m not a member on Reddit but it’s such a cool site, it’s especially fun to read the Game of Thrones rag-tag theories and spoilers!
I like the ‘evilbuildings’ subreddit :p
Lots of cool/funny photos there 🙂
I just checked it out, it’s hilarious. 😂 Especially this: https://www.reddit.com/r/evilbuildings/comments/8iyojl/when_the_seven_seas_isnt_just_enough/
Thanks for that!
Ha! That was good :p
‘Bossfight’ is another good one 😉
And congrats!
Thanks 🙂
A good reminder. I let weeks go by without checking my spam, because I forget. I’m going to do that right now!
Same 🙂
This keeps being a good reminder for me, every time someone likes or comments :p
