I Want More Movies Like ‘Black Panther’

black panther

I watched the new Marvel-movie, Black Panther, a few days ago, and I must say that I absolutely loved it. Not as much as I loved ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, but that  film had space-travel and monsters, so it had quite the advantage on me!

It is the first superhero-movie, to my knowledge, that is set in Africa, and features mostly african characters.

The main location of the movie, the fictional country of Wakanda, is a technological utopia built on the customs of african tribes.

That got me thinking about what superheroes inspired by other indigenous peoples from around the world would be like.

My thoughts immediately went to the indigenous peoples of my own country, the Sami people.

They reside in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, and a little into Russia. In a fictional setting, who knows what sort of hidden ice-kingdoms could be hidden up there.

One of the really cool parts of the movie was how traditional african clothes were used as a basis for the “afrofuturistic” designs of the costumes. I would really like to see how the same costume-designers would take on the traditional garb of The Sami.

I’m not sure what the name or powers of a Sami superhero should be, but including their thousand-year old practice of reindeer-herding in some way could lead to some cool stand-out superhero stuff.

I’ll stop now, and let this idea sit where it is.

Making a hero like this should be up to the individuals that are actually from the people in question.

What other cultures could make some new and interesting superheroes?

    1. Oh! Maybe he/she could have frost-grenades, to insta-freeze their enemies!

My first idea was that they would be riding on a reindeer, but I was unsure if that would be culturaly unsensitive or not.
      Frost-grenades should be fine 😛

  1. I really enjoyed Black Panther. I would be interested in seeing a Super Hero film passed on Asian nation to this extend. Diversity wise, I think that’s something that really is needed. Also a tale of a carribean or south american nation as well. Thanks for the follow

    1. Those are really good choices 🙂

It would be cool if they were able to make a superhero from Asia without tapping into the ninja and samurai tropes.

          1. Try Sikhism -it’s core tenets are pretty much everything you’d expect a super hero to follow as his creed.

            1. Yeah, that could be cool 🙂
And the hero could have the Five Articles Of Faith as part of their costume!

    1. I have actually written a script for the first part of a new comic I am making.
Should have something to show soon, I have a really good artist on it right now.

It’s going to have cute animals and gods and stuff.
If you are interested, please subscribe to my blog and/or newsletter 🙂

As for these ideas, I should probably leave them for people who are actually part of the indigenous peoples in question.

        1. I see you figured it out. Thanks 🙂

If you are seeing this in the WordPress Reader, I think you just have to press my name somewhere to get there.

Good to know, even if you don’t want to sign up to that.

  2. Haven’t seen that movie yet but your review suggests we should! Anyway, called by to leave my thanks for your recent decision to follow Learning from Dogs. Thank you!!

  3. One idea I’ve thought of in the past is an Australian Aboriginal superhero whose powers and backstory are based in the Dreamtime, songlines, etc. Get someone with firsthand knowledge who can write the story faithfully, and I think they could be a unique and fascinating character.

    1. That is a great idea, I would love to see that!

Got me thinking that maybe Taika Waititi could make a Maori superhero movie.
He did really good with Thor, so I wonder what he could do with his own ancestry 🙂
